This expression speaks for itself.

Two different timelines woven together seamlessly to provide the reader a thrilling historical fiction, The Speaking Stone by Author Ratnadip, transports one to the beautiful state of Tripura, a state endowed with Nature’s bounty, and some heritage sites that hold within their bosom a story.

When Saikat a young man from Mumbai, accidentally comes across a piece of stone that has some images carved on it, at an antique store, he is drawn to it. The piece of rock seems to him to communicate, wish him to unravel a secret. It seems to will him to find its missing piece. Curiosity gets the better of him, and Saikat finally discovers that Unakoti in Tripura could lead him to the other half of the stone that has been split vertically in the middle. The journey starts.

In Chandannagar in West Bengal, Shuvashini a young historian aspiring to research on a unique topic, suddenly finds herself demotivated by comments of a historian she holds in high regard. However, not one to give up easily, she decides to go ahead, and come up with a research work that she believes will give a befitting reply to the so-called historians who cannot think beyond the few areas researched. A startling discovery at the local library leaves her confused. Thus starts her journey to Unakoti.

What follows is some history and a mystery that is sure to keep the reader hooked till the end. As the story moves forward, the author weaves in the story of King Radha Kishore Manikya who ruled Tripura from 1896-1909, his close relationship with Poet Rabindranath Tagore, and the construction of Ujjayanta Palace. Interesting twists and turns create an aura of suspense. Parallel to the story of King Radha Kishore Manikya, another story unfolds, but this time in 2016-17. It is the story of Shuvashini and Saikat. As fate would have it, the two meet. What follows is a journey of discovery, a journey that sees the two bond together and face a challenge that could possibly end on an unpleasant note, if some people have their way.

Crafted brilliantly, The Speaking Tree is testimony to the fact that the author knows how to keep his readers hooked. Vivid imagery combined with great characterization make the book engaging.

A book with a unique plot, The Speaking Stone is a historical fiction that not only provides entertainment, but also a sneak –peek into the little State of Tripura. It speaks volumes of the author’s creativity and the research undertaken by him. Open it, and find a world of intrigue, romance and mystery open up before you.

The book is an absolute page-turner. I am definitely looking forward to reading the next part in the series.
