Lot For Others

Do the looks of a person matter in a true relationship? Why does a relationship end? Just because the redundant questions of the society can’t be answered? What would you feel when you meet that one person, whom you had left once upon a time, for the sake of his happiness in this ever-judging world, but whose actual happiness was in you, something you didn’t understand then. How would you react when you have to choose either one of two important things? Can life always give you a second chance? The story revolves around Ishanvi, a chubby girl. Everyone likes her, but only a few love her. Her looks are not appealing, whereas, her heart is of gold. She always puts herself behind others. She thinks of the world before contemplating about herself. What will happen when she gets into a relationship with a guy who is the dream man of every girl? Read the book to find answers to these questions, which, one day, you may ask yourself in life.

Story-line: Interesting. ‘Lot for Others’ starts with the narrator rejecting a suitor proposed by her mother, just because he is not the dream-man she looks forward to invite in her life. According to her he is a dumbo who “..is not brilliant with his looks. He is tall but not that handsome. He is dark but not that attractive.” It reveals the typical mindset of a youngster romantic at heart yet not practical in approach. Does her perception of beauty and looks change? Well for that you will have to read the story of Ishanvi whose diary jottings Sweta the narrator has a chance to go through. But here it is the other way round. Ishanvi is the ‘ugly duckling’ plump and self conscious, who can’t figure out what a good-looking guy like Vivaan sees in her that he is keen to make her a part of his life. Affected by what others say and what others feel Ishanvi takes some decisions that have far-reaching consequences on the lives of others. Does Ishanvi ultimately find true love? Will she shed her inhibitions about her looks? Will she give life a second chance? Will the story of Ishanvi open Sweta’s eyes? ‘Lot for Others’ will answer. The book in short, focuses on the inner turmoil that the ‘not so good looking’ go through, the psychology behind important decisions they take pertaining to their life, the reason for their low self-esteem and society’s hand in molding their character and shaping their thoughts . The book has its fair measure of twists and turns, romance and suspense.

Characterization : The characters are well-developed with all their imperfections.

Language and Pace : Simple and steady. At no point do you find the pace slackening nor the author hurrying up with the events.

Editing: This is where I found the book wanting. The editing needs to be tightened to take care of grammatical errors, wrong/ misplaced usage of words/ phrases as well as to make the story smooth and more enjoyable.

Overall an enjoyable read and a wonderful attempt by a budding writer (Sweta Sahu, the author is just a school girl), I’ll give the book a 3 out of 5.

A school girl with a wish to make a mark in life, Sweta Sahu believes that each person is a story by himself. Time and situation play a vital role in shaking a person from his/her reverie and making him/her aware of the story within him/ her. It is this belief that has helped Sweta pen ‘Lot for Others.’
