No Parking. No Halt. Success Non Stop!- REVIEW

TITLE : No Parking. No Halt. Success Non Stop!
AUTHOR: Abhishek Ratna
PUBLISHER: Supernova Publishers
GENRE: Non- fiction (Self-help literature)

A self-help book for success at work! No Parking. No Halt. Success Nonstop! has 50 career lessons for today’s 20teen generation.

Practical and comprehensive, the book often stretches to the point of ‘cunning without harming’. Interspersed with quotes, stories and humour, it also breaks a few myths. The author treads the fine line between ethical and non-ethical. The author is able to convince the reader about the necessity for professional success.

Having had a successful career in one of India’s leading banks, I could easily relate to the career lessons tailored by Abhishek Ratna for today’s 20teen generation. Each one of them took me down memory lane. They transported me to my career days and reminded me of similar situations I myself had faced and how I’d overcome stumbling blocks, handled tough bosses and fragile workplace relationships, been motivated by my peers and in turn motivated my team, etc…..

Each lesson is presented skilfully in a simple, easy to understand language. The author has taken care to keep the lessons short and sweet. While some lessons are explained with examples, case-studies and short stories, others are by way of tips. All the lessons have just one thing as their core – ‘success in workplace’. The book is divided into 13 sections of which the first twelve contain four lessons for each month of the year. The last and thirteenth section is devoted to ‘all time best career lessons’. There are two such lessons.

What I liked about the book is

1) that the author has presented a serious topic in a humorous manner thus making it a light yet powerful read. There is nothing in the pages of the book that is impractical. In fact I’d say that this is a book that’s not only for the 20teen generation nor only for those employed in the corporate world but for all generations as well as for those in the service sector, government and the self-employed too.

2) The  lessons are peppered with a number of beautiful quotes like :

“All of us, as human beings, seek to be respected. Even those who do not respect others have a deep seated desire to be respected.”

“A pat on the back can often motivate more than currency notes!”

“Best coaches never tell their athletes that they are wrong. They rather focus on creating awareness.”

“When nothing works, persistence will.”

“Spend more time with people who bring out the best in you.”

“Information is the key to success, anywhere and everywhere.”

“When an employee truly understands the meaning of his work and gets recognition for his efforts he performs the best.”

“Motivation is internal. It has to come from within you. Do not seek it anywhere else.”

“Failing is great! Isn’t it? I mean, it sets you free and, after all, failures are the pillars of success. So, you must fail!”

I can’t help but say that I loved the short stories narrated by the author to drive home his point, especially the story of the hare and the tortoise. It is one story that’s stayed with me till date since my kindergarten years but I’ve never looked at it the way the author has. Abhishek Ratna has retold it beautifully keeping the present day scenario in mind. Don’t miss it.

A self-help book packed with punch I’ll give ‘No Parking. No Halt. Success Non Stop!’ 4 on a scale of 5.
