Twelve time tested remedies

Standard
The numeral twelve is certainly strong. It stands for a dozen, the 12 hours leading up to noon or midnight, the twelve wonderful months in a year each special in some way or the other, the 12 memorable years at school ……………

Well the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the Wednesday prompt at Write Tribe was to share a part of me by introducing the readers to 12 wonderful persons in my life. But then I thought why not introduce them in separate posts instead of one? So I let go the idea. “Next what?” I asked myself.

Sitting at the dining table I was suddenly reminded of those days when I was taking my baby steps in the world of social media. I had not even started a blog. So anything and everything that came to my mind was shared with my friends through my timeline on FB. In those initial days I shared the knowledge handed down to me by my mother and grandmother via status updates. Among other things I shared some time tested remedies. They were an instant hit with my friends and colleagues. So here I share 12 of the many remedies handed down to me by my elders. These are those which I found very useful.

 “Insomnia?

 “Running nose /Sinusitis/ Headache/ Throat pain/ Cough/ Chest congestion?

Does that running nose and splitting headache trouble you? Well here is your answer.
“Take a tablespoon of coconut oil in a ladle. Put a generous pinch of turmeric powder or better still ground turmeric paste. Heat the mixture. Bring to boil and leave till it’s lukewarm, safe enough to dip your fingers in. Rub the mixture into the crown of your head. Tie your hair up (for ladies with long hair) or cover your head with a cloth. To be done just before retiring for the night. The next morning you wake up feeling much better.” Try this and relieve your head of that extra weight that’s pulling it down.

Throat pain?

Severe headache? Bitter yet effective. This could help –
Take a few ‘neem’ leaves. Chew and keep in your mouth for some time. You will find the ache receding.

Signs of that nasty cold coming on?

Chronic cough/ Cold/ Sinusitis?

Sinusitis?
Squeeze 3-4 drops of raw thulsi juice or Kayyoni (trailing eclipta/ keshabringa) juice in both nostrils. While doing so lie down on the side of your bed. Tilt your head down. Apply to one nostril pressing the other and breathe in. Repeat procedure for the other nostril. .Bring your head up and lie still for about 5 minutes. In case you feel like spitting, keep a bowl nearby and spit, lightly tilting your head to one side.

Is Sinusitis troubling you?
Boil water with dried ginger, thulsi leaves and a few pepper corns. Inhale the steam. The most effective way to inhale steam is – Boil the mixture in a narrow mouthed vessel for example “puttu kudam”. Place the vessel in front of you. Cover your entire self along with the vessel with a blanket or thick bed sheet. Inhale till you start perspiring profusely. Believe me this is 100 times better than the present day electric vaporizers you get in the market. You can also drink the above mentioned decoction.

Grandma’s Time Tested Home Remedy 10-

Another remedy for sinusitis/ cold.
Do nasya i.e squeeze the extract of “Thumbe” flower (“Chota halkusa in Hindi, “Tumba” in Malayalam and “Drona pushpin in Sanskrit) into your nostrils one at a time and breathe in. While doing so lie down on the side of your bed. Tilt your head down. Apply to one nostril pressing the other and breathe in. Repeat procedure for other nostril. Bring your head up and lie still for about 5 minutes. In case you feel like spitting, keep a bowl nearby and spit, lightly tilting your head to one side.

Chest congestion?
Chew 2- 3 black peppercorns every day. You may also try drinking milk boiled with 2-3 pepper corns or ¼ teaspoon of pepper powder till you are relieved of the congestion.

“Hypertension?”

A very effective remedy for High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
Scrap the trunk of drumstick tree ( Moringa Oleifera ). Boil the scraped skin in water till the water reduces to half the original quantity and consume.

You may have come across some of these while some may be new to you. Hope you too find them useful.

  1. Good list, Geetaji.
These days we go for OTC medicines. But, our kitchens have such low-cost & effective & natural remedies. Thanks to Granny & Grandma. Mine also advocated these 🙂

  2. Anita yes our kitchen is in fact a store house of easy, effective remedies. Yet we often prefer the costlier options inspite of being aware that they can cause harm to our system/ have side effects.
