Book Review – Just Kidding…Yours, Destiny

Title : Just Kidding…Yours, Destiny

Author : Anirban Das

Publishers : Notion Press

Genre : Fiction

Anirban Das

An engineering graduate with a passion for sports, books, travel, music and of course the pen too, Anirban Das completed his post graduation in Advertising from NMIMS, Mumbai. After working with an Indian Automobile Conglomerate in a variety of roles, he decided on pursuing his MBA at IIM, Ahmedabad. “Just Kidding…Yours, Destiny” is his debut novel.

The cover though simple is attractive and gives an insight into the book. The title is catchy, making one wonder how the story will unfold.

Blurb of the book

The implied essence of the story is about making the right choices, their consequences and the role of destiny.

The plot is a simple story, revolving around the complicated life of Kunal Roy. Ambitious Kunal is living the great Indian dream, having purchased a house in Mumbai, driving an expensive car and striving to earn pots of money. Having slogged for donkey’s years in the same company, Kunal believes that he is a star employee in his company. He is determined to reach the top with a simple mantra – hard work and dedication.

Kunal’s seemingly well planned life and ambitions turn awry with the sudden acquisition of his company and an abrasive new boss who puts Kunal to the sword. Kunal’s life is further turned upside down with the entry of a company rookie, Shrishti, compelling him to change his world view and his life’s priorities. Is Shristi for real or is she an illusion? And who is the real Kunal? Undergoing upheavals in both professional and personal life, Kunal looks to jettison his ambitions by embarking on a journey of self discovery, in an attempt to regain his lost identity and a semblance of control.

The book aspires to strike a chord with the readers, engage and entertain them. It has been written from the heart, in a manner which is characteristic of the author’s writing style. The story has been set in a typical Indian urban backdrop but the emotions enunciated, would transcend country barriers.

My Review

What to look for in the book?

If you are looking for a light read. Something you’d like to finish at one go. Then, this is definitely one you can place your hands on.

How did I find the book? Did it meet my expectations?

The story is as the blurb says, simple. It is engaging and unique. When I say unique, I mean the style of writing esp. the footnotes. The footnotes though meant to clarify some of the colloquial terms, usages etc, are hilarious at times. The author has added spice to them too. This is something you generally don’t come across.

The implied essence of the book mentioned in the blurb, is fulfilled. The story flows with ease. Most of the chapters carry thought provoking quotes. The one that I liked the most was, “There are many times in life when despite one’s best efforts, there are no results. But if our intentions are true and efforts sincere, then someday, things just start falling into place on their own, it’s magical.” So positive!

One can easily relate to the characters and the situations. There are some twists and turns which are on expected lines but what took me unawares was the ending. But then, queer are the ways of destiny.

How do I rate this book?

A quick read, one you are sure to enjoy. There are some typos here and there which I am sure will be set right in the next edition. Overall I rate this book as 4 on a scale of 5.

In the end

I thank the author, Mr. Anirban Das for being kind enough to send me a review copy of the book in exchange for an unbiased review. Das does have a knack for writing. His next book I am sure, will be something to watch out for.
