Morning Raga

The morning light is yet to be seen
The crickets can be heard from far and near
Singing are they, to their hearts content
Unmindful of the sleeping world

The cock sleeping, woke at four
Thought it’s time the world should wake
Let off a note so loud and clear
The baby in the cradle felt an urge to sing

The resting sun was yet to stir
But the crow in the nest felt it’s time to ‘crow’
Proud at having a beautiful voice
Let out a melody for the world to hear

The cuckoo could not take it for long
Decided to give the crow lessons in song
Let out a sound so sweet and serene
The man risen early could not help but sing along

The doors of the sanctum sanctorum was opened at five
Lamps were lit welcoming the morning light
Bells rang to awaken the Gods asleep
The hymn wafting through the air awakened all beings

The morning air cool and pure
Was filled with music all around
The cricket, the cock, the crow, the cuckoo
Joined the rustle of leaves to welcome the morn

The water gushing between the banks
Smiled and rushed humming along
The first rays fell on earth
The Morning Raga was complete.

    • Thank you Kalpana. While penning the lines I just put into words what I used to experience whenever I stayed with my grandmother. The daily ‘suprabhatham’ from the temple nearby was a treat for the ears.
